  3.      Identification - It is slightly larger than a Mallard. Breeding adults have a yellow bill with a red spot on its lower edge, a light gray back, black wingtips, with white spots and pink legs. Sexes are similar in appearance.

  5.      Morsels - To break open a crab or clam, the Herring Gull has "learned" to carry the food into the air and drop it on the rocks, or pavement, or even rooftops below. This is an example of learned behavior, rather than instinct. The young learn the behavior from watching the older birds.
